Homemade Bath Salts (personal craft)

Instead of spending a fortune on expensive bath products, whip up your own batch of soothing bath salts at home. Placed in a bottle or sealable jar, these salts make a great gift.

Two Bath Salts Recipes

Basic Bath Salts
1 cup salt
1 cup Epsom salt
1 cup baking soda

Add a little of the mixture to your tub for a revitalizing bath. For bubbles, just add 1 cup of shampoo. For a nice scent, add a few drops of fragrance oil.
Earth Bath Salts
½ cup Epsom salts
1 cup baking soda
  ½ cup rock salt
½ tsp vitamin E
2 tsp light oil (almond, sunflower...)
20 drops Patchouli essential oil
15 drops Cypress essential oil
5 drops Vetivert essential oil
Green Food coloring

Mix all salts & baking soda together. Then combine oil, essential oils, vitamin E & a few drops of coloring in a separate bowl. Add liquid to salts and mix thoroughly. You can add more green food-coloring if desired, but I find it nicer when it's a very light green as it does not look as artificial. To use: Add a few heaping tablespoons to bath.

Bath Salts Recipe
Use equal amounts of Epsom salt, table salt, and baking soda. Mix and add desired food coloring (I like to use the cream type) and essential oils. Put in jars, decorate, and give as gifts. We have used jelly jars and jars from drinks. Use your imagination and recycle!

Bath Salts with Glycerin Recipe
Take a mixing bowl and put in two 2 cups of Epsom salts. Add 1 Tablespoon Glycerin (can be found at drug stores or Wal-Mart). Drop food coloring into mixture to get the color that you want. Gauge this by mixing with your food mixer and mix until you get a nice even color that is the shade you want. When this mixture is the color that you want, add a few drops of fragrance. This can be found at any craft store or Wal-Mart. Continue mixing until all of the lumps are out and the mixture is a nice smooth even color, and you have it. You will need to either add or subtract the fragrance and the color to suit your own taste. Have fun. I have made literally hundreds of small bottles of this and use them for gifts.

Bath Salts with Dried Lavender or Rose Petals Recipe
1 pound baking soda
1 tablespoon dried lavender or rose petals
8 drops lavender essential oil
8 drops geranium essential oil.
You will need a ceramic or glass bowl, a wooden spoon, and a large sterilized glass jar with a tight fitting lid. Place the baking soda and dried petals in the bowl, all the essential oils, and mix thoroughly with the wooden spoon to combine. Pour the salts into the jar and keep in a cool dark place, handy to the bath. This makes enough for about 5 baths using 2 handfuls to the bath.

Rose Bath Salts
2 cups of Epson salt
1 cup sea salt
20 drops Rose essential oil
1 tablespoon glycerin
Dark pint (or red) paste or liquid food coloring
24 oz. decorative container
Mix the salts together in a large plastic bag with a tight zipper seal. Add the rose oil and glycerin. Tightly seal and shake to combine. Add the food coloring and shake until the desired color is reached, adding more food coloring if necessary. Store in the zippered bag for one week, shaking once a day to evenly distribute the color and oils. Pour into the decorative container and label.

Bath Salts, Bath Oil, and Homemade Makeup Remover
Mix 8 cups Epsom salts with one-cup baking soda. Add 1 tbsp glycerin and perfume oil or a flavored extract (like vanilla), and a drop or two or three of food coloring. Perfume amount depends on personal preference. Mix thoroughly, and put in pretty jars. Easy! I also make bath oil. Mix equal amounts baby oil and safflower oil (or sunflower or grape seed oil). Add perfume oil to preference. Makeup remover? Mix solid vegetable shortening (NOT lard) with no tear baby shampoo in equal amounts. Do NOT add scent as this may cause irritation to the eyes. Massage into face and wash off. All of the above make a nice gift when put in pretty jars or bottles and arranged in a basket.
